With many citizens recording policer officers in a negative light and image, the New York Police Department is considering adding cameras to police officers.
Following cities like Ferguson; Flagstaff, Ariz.; Minneapolis; Norfolk, Va.; and Washington, who now require police to have cameras either in their car or a body cam, New York have studied how the Los Angeles Police Department and will plan its own pilot project.
With that in mind, this is a good stepping stone for the NYPD. Many videos of police recorded by citizens do a good job at showing their true colors. But this does not mean people should stop recording.
We do not know how well this pilot program will work. There are many questions surrounding this idea, but of course there will always be a lot of questions surrounding any type of new pilot program. Nonetheless, I still think this is a good idea for the NYPD and hopefully a new start to end police brutality happening around the states.
With Jeter retiring in the next few days, it will be hard for the Yankees to find a replacement.
The shortstop market for the 2014-2015 off season is weak with Hanley Ramirez easily being the top choice.
But Ramirez can’t play shortstop and is stuck at third. He is also injury prone and will turn 32 this December.
The Yankees have no one less than 31 years olds in their main lineup and only one free agent shortstop is under 30 and that is Asdrubal Cabrera who will be 29 this November.
No one in their minor league system is ready to take over either with the closest being hit or miss prospect Abiatal Avelino, who is currently, is in Rookie ball and is batting .232.
With the team back loaded on expensive long term deals with players 30 and up, it will be hard for the Yankees to improve at any position. Teixeira still has two more years left on his contract as well as a 37 year old right fielder Carlos Beltran who is being paid $15 million for the next two years.
It’s not that the players who are signed for their age 31-34 season, it those same players who are going to be paid $15 million average salary past their 35 season.
Jacoby Ellsbury still has 6 more years left and will turn 36 by the end of his contract which expires in 2020. Catcher Brian McCann will be 34 by the end of his contract in 2018.
The good news, many of the older players this season will either have been release from the Yankees or will be a free agent.
Here is a list of Yankee free agents at the end of this season along who are 35 years old or older:
Ichiro Suzuki, 40, Brian Roberts 36, Alfonso Soriano38, Chris Capuano 35, Hiroki Kuroda 39
This still doesn’t solve the problem as next year the Yankees will boast a 35 year old Mark Teixeira, a 38 year old Alex Rodriquez and 38 year old Carlos Beltran playing positons and not DH, leading a chance for injuries.
But more good news is the Yankees starting rotation will be full of young pitchers.
Besides CC Sabathia who will be 35 in 2015, everyone in the rotation will be under 30 giving them a chance sign one veteran to help anchor the rotation.
One solution for the Yankees is to wait until the end of the 2016 season where Martin Pardo, Teixeira, Beltran and Sabathia will have expired contracts giving the Yankees a chance to get younger at those position as well as hopefully having a farm system that is not ranked in the bottom 30.
Or they could go the Houston Astros route and start to trade every player on the team for whatever prospect they can find to build up their minor league system, Either way it will be a long wait or even by the 2017 season for the Yankees to be a contending team again, barring that the General manger continues to hand out big back loaded contracts to players 31 and older.
